See- Thru Tree backgrounds
By Jon Hunt
In this tutorial I will try to explain how to build the see through tree backgrounds that you see in the game. For this tutorial, I am going to assume that you know the basics of makemap and understand how to make sectors and 1 way walls.
Enclosed with this text file, you will also find a sample map called trees.map that shows you how I made the background. I suggest you print this out and then open up the trees.map in makemap so you can follow through.
When you first open up trees.map in makemap, (in 3D mode) you will find that you face a tall back wall with a tree texture in it. If you look to your left, you will see another wall labled "1" . To the left of that you will see another labled "2", and so on. Walk around and see the process in the various stages of construction.
Now go to 3D mode. If you look, you will see that there are two red lined sectors running around the inside of the main sector. The innermost sector is the one that will end up being the background with the trees.
Step 1 (in 2D mode)
Make 2 sectors inside your main sector as I have done in trees.map.
Step 2 (in 3D mode)
Raise up the innermost sector to the approximate height that you want the trees. Usually around 15 -18 page ups.
Step 3 (in 3D mode)
Point at the back wall of your original sector, (not the wall you just raised), and lower it to the same height as you raised your sector in step 2. Now you should end up with something that looks like wall "1" in trees.map.
Step 4 (in 3D mode)
Point at the new wall you made in step 2 and hit "1" on your keyboard. (not your num pad)
You should have a wall that looks like wall 2 in trees.map. ( you may also end up with a texture and not the default yellow grid like I did)
Step 5 (in 3D mode)
Piont at the yellow grid or texture you made in step 4 and press "2". Now while still pointing at the yellow grid or texture you made in step 4, press"V" to change the texture to a treetop texture. You should now end up with a wall that looks like wall 3 in trees.map.
Step 6 (in 3d mode)
Now point at your new texture that you placed in step 6, and press "M". This changes the texture to a see through one instead of a texture with purple background. Thats It! Now all you need to do is resize the top and bottoms of your newly created tree background.
